Kali is the dance of time, a dynamic force of energy which expresses itself through the cycle of creation and destruction. She is a benevolent mother, nurturing all that is created, at the same time destroying self inflicting states of Ego. Shiva is an Observer, the primeval consciousness unmoved; he is a state of Sat-chit-ananda (Absolute Consciousness Bliss). Kali helps liberate oneself from the cycle of karma occurring through birth and unite with the Unmoving Infinite that is Shiva.
